1. WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Rhubarb: helps the passage of food and contents through the gut (works mainly on pyloric sphincter to the stomach), helpful with colic where several feeds have become backed up.
Ginger: relaxes the smooth muscle around the oesophageal sphincter allowing it to work better, pass air and work more efficiently, allowing trapped air in mucosal lining to escape.
Magnesium: cationic molecule which helps to release trapped air.

2. ARE THERE ANY INTERACTIONS?
No interactions as the Rhuger is only localised in action – no absorption into the systemic circulation.

3. WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Reflux, colic, wind, constipation.

4. WHAT IF WE ARE USING OTHER ANTACIDS/ WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF Rhuger OVER OTHER ANTACIDS?
Gaviscon is only for reflux and works by stabilising stomach contents only
Ranitidine inhibits secretion of gastric acid, 1 dose lasts 12 hours but again only for reflux and dyspepsia.
If using other antacids, wean child onto Rhuger until effect is seen, then wean off other antacids until Rhuger is only product being used.

5. UP TO WHAT AGE CAN WE USE IT?
Up to 1 year old, most babies’ GI systems are developed by then, no hard and fast rule really.

6. WHEN SHOULD WE STOP USING IT?
Titrate dose down slowly over several days until symptoms reappear, if they don’t reappear the problem is probably solved and no longer needs treatment.

7. HOW LONG BEFORE I SEE RESULTS?
Look for control over time, results will not be instantaneous. Monitor dosages (suggested to keep a log book of doses) in order to determine the minimum possible amount to see results and maintenance.

8. HOW LONG WILL THE BOTTLE LAST?
Depends on dosing, based on starting dose of 10 drops 6 times a day 100ml will last about 2-3 weeks, but depends on dosing and frequency.

9. WHY IS Rhuger BETTER THAN OTHER ANTACIDS?
Other antacids such as ranitidine and gaviscon are only indicated for reflux/dyspepsia and only stabilise the stomach contents whereas Rhuger helps to remove the problem by aiding the natural action of the GI system.

10. CAN IT BE ADDED TO FEEDS OR DOES IT HAVE TO BE GIVEN CONCENTRATED?
Preferably should be given on its own when first beginning to use it, once maintenance is achieved it is ok to add to feeds.

11. ADDITIONAL ADVICE ASIDES FROM USING Rhuger TO EASE SYMPTOMS
• Burping baby at frequent intervals during feeds, slight rocking motion helps to remove excess air.
• Burping before feeds as quite often baby will have wind in their tummy before feeding begins
• Be aware of how long baby is feeding for because they could be sucking air
• Change/alternate the length of feeds so baby’s system doesn’t start to predict what is coming, which can increase chances of baby sucking air resulting in wind build up.
