Cemetery Buildings in New Zealand
 
Buildings in the cemetery landscape are now very rare and their conservation and retention is urgent. At one time every large cemetery would have had a sexton’s cottage and possibly a chapel.

Drawing of the original Catholic Bishops’ Tomb, Southern Cemetery, Dunedin. After desecration and vandalism it was demolished and replaced by the tomb below.

Morgue building (1902) adjacent to (by historical accident) Dunedin’s Southern Cemetery. This is a very rare example as there are no other early morgue buildings in existence. (Back to Top)

 
Pukekohe East Church and graveyard 1863 - This is a postcard of the church around 1890+. The church held it's 1st service April 1863.
