Its striking bush covered hills and
valleys at the head of a long natural harbour attracted Maori settlers as long as four
centuries ago. In 1848 Scottish settlers established a town there, bestowing upon it the
ancient name of Edinburgh. Not long after the settlers’ arrival gold was discovered
in Otago and the then small town of Dunedin become the commercial capital of New Zealand
and the centre for the nations wealth. |
Today, Dunedin is
foremost a University City with some 10% of its (approximately) 115,000 population
attending the tertiary institutions. |
